Since some years the Rapid Application Development platform of Oracle, Oracle Application Express, has gained more and more fans around the globe. I like it, and so do many others. Since today the new main release is available on the Oracle Technology Network for download.

Mike Hichwa, vice president of Software Development at Oracle, calls it the most significant release yet as it adds more features than before and it pushes the platform far further than previous releases. And it does. APEX 4.0 really kicks the functionality and therefore business value to the next level.

Web 2.0 is the main focus on this release. Offering various improvements for both developer as well as business users. Dynamic actions are the real deal. Offering end users great desktop-like functionality without the hassle of developing complex JavaScript and AJAX. This means that we can deliver more functionality to the end user within a shorter amount of time.

Where the 2008 3.1 release of Oracle Application Express offered the great new functionality of Interactive Reports to us, creating a way where end users could consolidate and order information themselves, End User Computing takes a quantum leap in APEX 4.0 with the new ‘Websheets’ functionality. Websheets offer end users a web environment where they can adjust, create and read data within a group of people, with no development needed.

The first time I encountered Cloud Computing, which was a few years ago, I realized that this just might be the future of our business. But why? At first I couldn’t grasp it exactly. Whether we take a look at Software as a Service, SaaS, Platform as a Service, PaaS or simply hiring some computing power, I learned that five elements are essential within this part of our business.

1. Strategic. Every step into the wondrous world of the cloud has to be a strategic one. People tend to think of it as a scary choice, but the last few years it has taken a leap and therefor there are some more guarantees build in. Once an organization has made the choice for the Cloud, they have done it with some reasons. The following thoughts may lye beneath those choices(, but maybe there are more?) The strategic choice for the Cloud can be found within economical aspects as well as business strategic elements. Cloud computing might mean that the internal IT department of an organization might get smaller or even absence. It shows us that IT really has to be supportive of business processes. Cloud computing therefor only can exist if this is true.

2. Sustainable. While in the traditional business software world we like to think in orders of ‘maximum availability’ and ‘software / hardware performance’ the essentials of cloud computing lye in ‘shared services’. This means, that when we maintain the traditional view we need to make sure our hardware and software are able to handle the stress of the maximum load needed, sometimes even redundantly. This means at least two servers that have the computing power we, at the peaks of it’s use, need. Even if the application or systems running on it only need to run a few hours a day. With the shared computing powers of the cloud we can take advantage of the stress balance that we simply have because we all work on a different time-table. Business hours are not the same over the world. In this way we only consume that what we actually need.

3. Services and Standards. When we move towards the cloud we will need to force ourselves to work with standards. The service we will work with need to be based on these web standards if we want to take real advantage of them. A lot is said about standards, and this is, again, a strategic choice within an organization. Standards make sure we can ‘recycle’ and ‘reuse’ our software. When we take a look at what this means for cloud computing, we see that this is the only way to go. Future integration and migration will be a lot simpler and maintenance will get cheaper.

4. Money. As we know, it all starts with money. When we start using cloud computing there’s no need for a large injection of capital to get started. The capital expenditure (CAPEX) will get lower, however the operational expenditure (OPEX) will probably get higher. This means that there’s no need to invest initially in hardware (and sometimes software) costs. We only pay for what we use.

5. Scalable. The Cloud is more scalable than any traditional hardware / software implementation. This is because we share the services and therefor simply can add more power to the service we’re running. This scalability can be very attractive for organizations that have a traditional scalable market and work with variable workforces. Besides this, it might just be very attractive for startups, because the uncertainly of growth is something that’s not an issue anymore.

These are just my thoughts, are there any more elements that we should take account for?

There has been a lot to do about the Oracle acquisition of Sun Microsystems. I’ve found it an appealing time and last weeks announcements have been great. It’s all about innovation and more and more research and development. Oracle, or at least it seams that way, really is into it for the win.

One great example is the future of the OpenOffice.org Suite. Oracle now has a fully fledged office suite in hand that makes them an even bigger competitor for Microsoft. To say that they now have their missiles aimed at the software giant is a bit too much in my opinion, but for the enterprise solutions part it certainly makes a point.

With ‘Oracle Cloud Office’ Oracle will develop a complete office suite, based on open standards, that will be tightly integrated with other Oracle parts of their enormous stack, Mainly integration with Oracle’s BI Suite, OBIEE, and WebCentre Suite will mean some great changes. Now user interaction will be even better. Especially the potential with integration, somewhat like the integration of Microsoft Office and SharePoint Server, will set the lines.

The new, soon to be expected if we might want to believe the rumors, Oracle Cloud Office Suite, there will be a complete orifice suite that works on the desktop (all operating systems as OpenOffice does now), the web (I hope it will work as great as Google Apps) and mobile (let’s hope for an iPad application). This means it will become the first office suite that will work on every platform. Especially, with the integration of WebCentre, with all your content on every platform.

When there will be large choice in connectors and extensions available for the new Office Suite, which can be developed in Oracle Jdeveloper, the horizon stretches further and further. What can you all do when we have connectors to the Oracle Database, SOA integration, tightened integration with Oracle BI and BI Publisher? What to think of a complete mashup with an Office Suite and Oracle Application Express? Wow, the thoughts and possibilities are endless.

We zijn inmiddels al een paar jaar bezig met hetgeen we ooit eens aan wilde duiden met de term Web 2.0. Inmiddels zijn er meters boeken over verschenen, hele studies ontwikkeld en iedereen heeft een mening. Over het algemeen is de tendens dat Web 2.0 in het bedrijfsleven nogal wat ellende weg kan nemen. Delen van kennis, maar ook interactief met informatie omgaan zou wel eens voor de volgende informatieknaller kunnen gaan zorgen. Althans, dit was het idee. Om dit hele gebeuren het laatste jaar luister bij te zetten is men met een hele creatieve nieuwe term op de proppen gekomen: Web 3.0. Dat dit misschien wel het mooiste woord is wat er ooit is bedacht moge duidelijk zijn, dit is knallen jongens! Het idee achter de term Web 3.0 slaat overigens wel ergens op. Het is ‘t idee dat we van interactieve en op de community gerichte applicaties overstappen naar persoonlijke informatie en dat we zelf bepalen waar deze vandaan komt. Webservices, Cloud Computing, maar zeker ook een plaats voor APEX. Dit is iets wat ik zelf al vaker aangeduid heb met de ‘derde iteratie’. Ofwel, als eerste zullen we naar het web moeten bewegen, data wordt breder beschikbaar. De tweede is (of was, inmiddels) het overstappen naar interactiviteit, delen en opslaan. Het derde is het persoonlijk maken van de gegevens die we tot onze beschikking hebben. Over een paar jaar slechts een webapplicatie met alle informatie die wij voor onze dagelijkse bezigheden nodig hebben. Wat een droom….

Oracle heeft een beta versie van Mix gepubliceerd. Deze ‘Social Networking Site’ van Oracle zelf is weliswaar nog wel erg Beta, maar wel weer een stapje verder. We kunnen hyven binnen Oracle! Je kan nu je eigen profiel in elkaar klussen, lid worden van groepen, groepen aanmaken, vriendjes maken, vragen stellen aan elkaar, blogjes posten en nog veel meer. Leuk om te zien is dat we nu dan ook binnen de Oracle wereld web2.0 gaan. (mooi begrip ook…). Door deze interactie, samen met ontwikkelingen als de Oracle wiki, de forums en meer, komt er steeds meer contact vanuit Oracle naar buiten toe. Dit is zeker niet iets verkeerds. Oracle tracht zichzelf natuurlijk graag te profileren als de Informatie Company, en dat gaat ze op deze manier steeds beter lukken. Ik denk zelfs dat Oracle op dit punt een van de meest ondersteunende leverancier is, maar daar kan ik me natuurlijk in vergissen. Wat je wel merkt is dat met dit soort ontwikkelingen de krachten van ‘open source’, namelijk de community, binnen het bedrijfsleven zijn intrede doet. Een sociale, transparante werkcultuur noem ik dat graag. Al met al, kijken of dit een beetje van de grond komt, dan zal ik zeker vaak op mix.oracle.com te vinden zijn!

Ik weet het, we zouden het over Apex hebben, of althans iets wat daaraan gerelateerd is. Maar toch wil ik weer even iets totaal anders melden, omdat ik er blij mee ben en denk dat de rest van de wereld ook dit moet proberen. Sinds jaar en dag ben ik een groot voorstander van het Linux besturingssysteem, maar omdat de desktop varianten meestal wat meer van je tijd opslokken om het een en ander helemaal lekker te laten draaien was ik de afgelopen maanden toch best redelijk tevreden met mijn laptopke waar xp op draait. Ook thuis had ik welliswaar een Linux server draaien (ubuntu), maar alle desktop activiteiten bleef ik met het laptopje doen, toch fijn dat het allemaal zo lekker communiceerd tegenwoordig. Ook de Mac in de slaapkamer fijn mijn servertje fijn en de xbox trekt de media als een trein. Toch miste ik weer eens iets. Nu heb ik eindelijk weer eens een Linux Desktop systeem draaien en meteen verliefd. Mandriva (oude liefde roest niet) 2007.1 is het sleutelwoord en vanaf moment van installeren een droom. Alle partities zoals het moet, bijzonder snel, configureren als een kleine kleuter met vingerverf, urpmi lijkt met de dag beter te vungeren, communiceerd vanuit het doosje met alle systemen, moeders begrijpen de werking en ik vermoed dat zelfs mijn duizend jaar oude ati kaartje er niet eens om moet huilen, ondanks de 3d desktop functionaliteiten, de versnelde kubus achtige iet wat overdreven grafics. Nu ben ik bijzonder te spreken over de functionaliteiten van een applicatie, hiervoor zal ik nooit meer van Linux (KDE) afstappen, Amarok, het fijnste progje ooit in elkaar geklust. Muziek, onder controle, met een grote C. Dit is wat je wilt hebben, Collecties, iPod binnen enkele seconden herkend en up to date gebracht, zonder te zeuren om iTunes, weg gooien van je collectie of dat soort ongein, dynamische afspeellijsten, LastFM integratie, Podcasts.. de werken dus. Probeer het en val ook in de liefde.

Zoals Oracle zelf al aangeeft, is één van de sterkste punten van APEX, dat alles web-based is met HTML en Javascript.
Het is mogelijk om in APEX op de meeste plaatsen gebruik te maken van deze twee programmeertalen naast de (bij oracle) bekende taal PL/SQL.

Nu biedt APEX meerdere mogelijkheden op het gebied van gebruik van HTML, Javascript en zelfs andere webonderdelen. Ik zal dit onderverdelen in drie verschillende blogs over deze onderwerpen, namelijk:

* Stylesheeting en Templates
* Webservices (RSS, Video’s, Googlemaps, etc)
* Advanced Javascript Components

Deze onderdelen zullen de komende tijd aan bod komen op dit blog.
