Just updated my entire calendar for this years Oracle OpenWorld. And it certainly looks promising. I decided to divide the days I’m in San Francisco into themes. All with their own specific focus and lots and lots of interesting news, insights, lessons and (hopefully) extending my network and knowledge for the better.

Friday is the day of the Oracle SOA Partner Advisory Council. Here we will be talking and discussing the new Oracle SOA and BPM suites. During the day I hope to get more insights in the real value for customers and the types of solutions that are created. Would be great to meet some of the great names in the Oracle SOA business as well.

Sunday is traditionally the day for the Oracle PartnerNetwork. During the OPN Forum I hope to hear about new ways of doing business with the Oracle corporation as well as the new ways Oracle tends to work with it’s partners. Hopefully, after the ‘specialized’ introduction last year, things will definitely change. For the better. I strongly believe that, with a strong and influential supplier like Oracle, partnerships can be profitable. During the OPN Forum Oracle regularly points out the key technologies where the focus will lay in the coming fiscal year. Hope this lines up with my expectations about the combination of SOA and Enterprise 2.0.

On Monday the Oracle Enterprise Architecture Executive Summit 2010 will take place. Personally, I’m really looking forward to this. I believe that Enterprise Architecture can be a strong facilitator of change within the organization, as long as it’s really focused as Enterprise Architecture, instead if Enterprise IT Architecture. (Two completely different approaches, but too often mistaken for one and another.) Especially the breakout sessions about Enterprise Architecture and Business – IT Alignment look promising.

Tuesday is my deep-technology day. In-depth sessions on Oracle Application Express, mainly on APEX 4.0 and the new possibilities. But also a lot on SOA and enterprise implementations and customer stories. My colleague Edwin Biemond has his session at 17.00 hours, but I’m also interested in the session by Rich Manalang and Jake Kuramoto with the inspiring title: ‘Web 2.0 Versus Enterprise 2.0: Lost in Translation’. So this probably will be a last-minute tough decision.

My Wednesday will be, next to some APEX sessions, “Method-Wednesday”. How to develop real value gaining applications (using Oracle technologies.) Next to my own CreativITy (Creative Software Development. Or: How to gain everything within your IT Project) session on Wednesday morning at 9 am at the Mason hall at the Parc 55 hotel, I’m especially looking forward to the ‘Managing an Oracle Unified Method Project with Scrum’ session by Lauren Clark and Tom Spitz at 5 pm.

Fortunately, after that it’s time for some real fun at Treasure Island with the Black Eyed Peas.

On Thursday me, and my colleagues, will fly back to The Netherlands. I still have some morning sessions about Enterprise 2.0 and APEX 4.0 in my schedule, but we will see how much time I have for those.

And what about you? What does your Oracle OpenWorld 2010 schedule look like?

T minus 6 weeks. The anticipation for this years Oracle OpenWorld is kicking in. What can we expect? Are there things we cannot participate? What is the great unknown and which sessions are a must? All these questions for one great week in San Francisco.

Like all OpenWorlds before this one, there will be loads of sessions to attend (1800 and counting). Various dinner parties to attend. Open bars. And sailing trips on the bay (hopefully this year I won’t fill up my agenda that much, so I can finally actually go on the Oracle Catamaran… ). Let’s face it, I got a Blogger Pass and I’m an Oracle ACE, so I can attend pretty much everything. But it just might be too much. What’s worth the visit?

There are some promising sessions about Oracle Application Express 4.0, like one on JavaFX in combination with APEX and a session on Large APEX projects. Service Oriented Architecture is bigger than ever with sessions like one by my colleague Edwin Biemond about migrating from Forms to SOA.

Are there any sessions you think I really shouldn’t miss out on? I’m really looking forward to learn more about Enterprise 2.0, Architecture principles and more on this years Oracle OpenWorld.

Last week I talked about it briefly: Oracle Unified Method, OUM. A way to, completely implement the Oracle Stack, with an Agile vision. The vision Oracle is talking about here is to support the successful implementation of every Oracle product, application, middleware and database. And this is where it gets extremely interesting.

The OUM is based upon the Unified Process. Nothing weird here, RUP (the rational method of UP) is probably the most used iterative implementation method around. Oracle has certainly his own implementation, but that mainly is to be found in the completeness of the method. Not only implementation, but also the other necessary parts of the Enterprise IT lifecycle. These are bound in the three focus areas around OUM: Envision, to ensure the enterprise level processes, Implement, to support the implementation of Oracle technology products and Manage, to support disciplined management of IT projects and programs.

Within these three focus areas, let’s talk Implementation. Oracle Unified Method is developed with some ‘goals’ in mind. These goals can best be described in the way that it’s a complete method framework, in one. A best of breeds situation that come from years of experience of implementing Oracle products by their own consulting force. I’m not the biggest fan of Oracle Consulting, but this seams to make a point.

Especially the combination of a proven approach to Agile projects (which definitely shows us that the method is enormous, but we should only use what we actually need), the technology knowledge inside the toolkit and method and the fact that development using OUM is business driven makes it a great way to implement custom software developed on the Oracle Stack.

OUM helps us to grasp the essence of an Oracle project, and delivers it in a few different ways to the team. Business Analysts, Designers, Developers, Project managers and Architects can all work with their own set of information with a clear method. This is the only framework I’ve seen that’s so complete and yet flexible.

The coming weeks I will show you how the framework actually works and where the real value is to be found. The question remains: how do we get control over the power of the Oracle stack without loosing in Agility?

People who really know me, realize that I don’t fall in love easily. Well, I do. But this time it’s different. Oracle released an impressively complete method to their Partners, called Oracle Unified Method.

There are a lot of methods in the world of Software Development, Project Management, Life Cycle Management and Enterprise Architecture. Most of them combine some ‘best-practices’ and are set up pretty general in order to make sense in a wide variety of projects. Those methods rarely combine different approaches to the Enterprise Information Technology Lifecycle. The Oracle Unified Method is a bit different, it combines Agile Principle and best-practices (on different subjects like Project Management, Life Cycle Management and Enterprise Architecture) with the real know-how on the complete Oracle Stack.

Organizations working with a wide variety of Oracle products, such as the SOA Suite, Database but also the complete Applications stack, really need the use of Oracle Unified Method (OUM) for their IT Strategy and IT Lifecycle. This framework offers a complete set of tools and practices that make managing a lot easier.

But it doesn’t end there. OUM is adaptive. And, as I see it, it can be changed and implemented in a wide variety of ways. It offers us the complete cycle in any Agile project and is based upon the Unified Process and DSDM (Dynamic Systems Development Method). In this way we can manage and steer our projects in a lean way. Just get the elements in the very complete OUM stack that you actually need. As the OUM is completely focused on business results and steers on agility it is said to be highly adaptive and manageable.

Soon, I will talk a little bit more on the exact ‘how’ Oracle Unified Method will help us deliver Agile Projects, based on the Oracle Stack.

Today will be Oracle PartnerNetwork day at OpenWorld. And we shall begin this day with some big news, and you are here to pitch in on it. The old OPN status and levels will no longer be. From December 1st, we will have a completely new status and level type going on in the OPN. Oracle likes to call it OPN Specialized. And these Specialized partner-levels are entirely new and actually it will help a lot further in knowing what a partner does and where he’s good at, I hope.

Because the last years the Oracle product portfolio got bigger and bigger, some partners weren’t able to compete with the very large consulting “machines” and it looked like Oracle didn’t believe in their performing and knowledge based (small) partners anymore. Now that the OPN levels are defined in four tracks; Database, Middleware, Applications and Industries, the small and specialized partners can compete again!

With these new tracks and some whole new levels; Remarketer, Silver, Gold and Platinum, the competition is on, for all sized partners of Oracle. It will get a little getting used to, ‘cous admit it sounds a bit Microsoft, but hope it will get new perspectives. In the old program it would be best to shove boxes by selling as many licenses as possible. In this new program knowledge is important and licenses are just part of the deal. I’m looking forward of hearing more about this today at the Oracle PartnerNetwork Forum.

Over het afgelopen jaar is Oracle Application Express twee keer vaker geadopteerd. Of, op z’n engels: ‘Over the past year, the adoption of Oracle Application Express has increased twofold’. Dat is natuurlijk niet mis! Volgens de mail, gericht aan Oracle Partners in de Benelux heeft dit voornamelijk als reden dat je lekker makkelijk en snel een fatsoenlijke applicatie ontwikkeld met APEX. Klopt. Nu heeft voor het Oracle PartnerNetwork, OPN, men een leukigheid georganiseerd. Namelijk een Webinar over APEX, twee keer! Op 12 maart en 2 April zullen de ADSL lijnen opengezet worden om het een en ander over APEX uit te leggen aan partners van Oracle. Nu begint het natuurlijk echt. Wat het programma is van deze fijne internet seminars, want daar staat webinar voor, is nog niet bekend. Desondanks denk ik dat dit alweer een aanwijzing is dat we APEX toch wel echt serieus moeten gaan nemen. Dit wisten wij natuurlijk allang, maar de laatste maanden merken we toch dat ook vanuit Oracle er meer moeite gestopt wordt in het promoten van onze favoriete ontwikkeltool.

Afgelopen zaterdag ben ik bezig geweest om zowel de Sales Champion als PreSales Champion certificaten van Oracle te behalen over database 11g. Wat mij in die testen opviel is dat Application Express een zeer prominente plaats inneemt. Dat vinden wij waarschijnlijk niet gek, maar toch ben ik verbaast. De presentatie binnen de cursus werd gegeven door David Peake, ons niet onbekend, en er zijn nogal wat potentiële voordelen voor APEX te noemen, ook voor verkoop. Leuk om te merken dat juist vanuit Oracle deze initiatieven naar boven komen en dat APEX genoemd wordt als verkoopargument voor de 11g database. Dat Application Express steeds serieuzer genomen wordt in de Oracle wereld en dat we er niet meer vanuit kunnen gaan dat Oracle APEX ziet als iets kleins doet mij deugd. Niet alleen de benoeming van APEX als een belangrijk onderdeel van de 11g database, maar juist doordat deze naast database opties als RAC, Real Application Testing en de Oracle Warehouse Builder betekend dat we, zoals ik al een tijdje realiseer, in een nieuw APEX tijdperk zijn beland. De uniekheid van het product APEX wordt bovenal genoemd! De concurrentie van Oracle heeft niet zoiets in huis.

De Caesar Groep is genomineerd voor de Oracle Partner Awards in de categorie ‘Best Consulting Partner’. Een erg leuke nominatie die laten zien dat we met de club zeker op de juiste weg zitten. We zijn niet alleen enorm innoverend bezig, maar weten dit ook toe te passen op concrete oplossingen voor echte problemen waar de klanten mee zitten. Niet mis dus dat dit ook door Oracle erkend wordt en op deze manier toont ook Oracle aan dat we sterk bezig zijn en dat onze propositie erg krachtig en sterk is. Daarnaast iets wat ik persoonlijk natuurlijk erg leuk vind: ik ben zelf ook genomineerd, en wel in de categorie ‘Oracle Personality of the Year’. Een enorme boost welke aangeeft dat mijn inzet, enthousiasme en energie niet alleen door mijn werkgever, klanten, maar ook door onze leverancier, Oracle, niet onopgemerkt gaat! Op 12 juni aanstaande zal tijdens het Oracle ‘The Art of Networking’ evenement de uitslag bekend worden gemaakt. Ik sta al te stuiteren en ben dan ook zeker van de partij aankomende donderdag. Dit is natuurlijk een prachtige beloning voor mijn visie over de Oracle oplossingen en de manier hoe een corporate IT omgeving eruit zou moeten zien. De nominatie alleen al beschouw ik dan ook als een extra motivator om verder te gaan met de werkwijze die ik en mijn collega’s hanteer. De award winnen zou natuurlijk nog mooier zijn… ik zal jullie op de hoogte houden!

Toegegeven: het is iets meer dan een dag geleden, maar alsnog even een korte evaluatie van de presentatie over ‘Advanced Oracle Application Express Development’ door mij en Bart afgelopen donderdag 8 novamber bij het Orakel thuis. Het was nog even stressen, omdat de proxyserver van Oracle werkelijk alles tegen hield en het dus onmogelijk was om voorbeelden te geven van o.a. RSS-feeds welke in Apex werden ingelezen. Ondanks het feit dat ook de dba’s bij Oracle zelf dit niet wisten op te lossen hebben we wel het een en ander kunnen laten zien. Blijkbaar was de invalshoek die wij gekozen hadden goed gevallen, want het publiek reageerde bijzonder enthousiast. We hebben ervoor gekozen om aan de hand van voorbeelden en een aantal redenen waarom te laten zien dat het vrij eenvoudig is om je (toch al gave) apex applicatie te verijken met JavaScript, AJAX – klap, klap, klap – en Logica en Data van derden (Third Party Integration). Doordat een tweetal man voor ons ook over Apex gepraat hadden was het mogelijk om deze onderdelen aan te snijden, het publiek was inmiddels al grofweg bekend met de mogelijkheden. Vanavond zal ik even de sheets en overige documentatie die hieruit rolde nog even publiseren. Aan het einde van de presentatie kon ik nog een verassing mededelen: Wij zullen, in samenwerking met Oracle, op 28 maart 2008 bij Oracle een volle middag op de verschillende aspecten van Apex ingaan. Binnenkort zal ik hier een stuk meer over vertellen. Volgens mij hebben we een Go!

Vandaag was het zover: in de Heineken Music Hall werd ons nog even duidelijk gemaakt hoe waanzinnig Oracle Database 11g wel niet is. Ik moet dan ook eerlijk zeggen dat ik bijzonder onder de indruk ben. Een aantal nieuwigheidjes werden iets verder belicht en zijn dan ook zeker de moeite waard. Een aantal voorbeelden zal ik hier noemen en in de nabije toekomst zeker verder uitleggen en hopelijk ook in de praktijk brengen. Advanced Compression is een technology waarmee je automatisch minder gebruikte data kan compressen, weg zetten op goedkopere storage en dus veel centen mee kan besparen. Een van de meest waanzinnige onderdelen is wel Real Application Testing waarmee het mogelijk wordt om met de complete dataset en huidige functionaliteiten van je database te testen. Hiermee zal het eindelijk mogelijk worden om daadwerkelijk nieuwe functionaliteiten te testen in een stressvolle omgeving en daadwerkelijke benchmarks te verkrijgen. Over Benchmarks gesproken: vandaag is er een aantal malen herhaald dat Oracle 11g vierenzeventig procent sneller is dan MS SQLserver in een windows omgeving. Hartstikke leuk natuurlijk, maar laten we dat nog eens in de praktijk bekijken. Wel is duidelijk dat de nieuwste Oracle database appart is ontwikkeld voor het Windows platform. Hierdoor zullen er inderdaad grote verschillen te zien zijn met vorige edities van de database. Ook is er uitgebreid nagedacht over ontwikkelen in dotNet voor de Oracle database, zo is er ODP.NET en de Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET. Ook een van de onderdelen waar ik welliswaar eerder van had gehoord maar nu nog een tikkeltje enthousiaster over ben: Oracle TimesTen in memory database. Een Database welke je in geheugen zet in je applicatie laag. Hiermee kan data in letterlijk miljoensten van seconden verwerkt worden en is het mogelijk om met een Hibernate laag deze op een degelijke manier te benaderen terwijl de database zelf op de achtergrond de boel regeld.
